At the tender age of 18, Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju has created history by becoming the youngest FIDE World Chess Champion in the world. He clinched the title from Singapore after defeating reigning champion Ding Liren in the final game of a sensational tension-filled series of 14 games.

After battling for a whole three weeks during which most had anticipated the rival players would have to enter tiebreaks to finalize the winner between them, a very unfortunate mistake by Ding at the last game gifted Gukesh with the clear win that made him the second Indian winner of the crown, as after Viswanathan Anand's triumph in 2000.

Gukesh's triumph marks a historical moment in Indian chess since it brings home the world title after more than a decade. The young master has proved not only his worth as a brilliant strategist but also the great promise of a new chapter in sports not limited to this victory in motivating players around the globe.

Gukesh received widespread praise and wishes from fans, players, and dignitaries across the world after his win. In a video shown by a Google professional inviting Gukesh to visit the booth of the tech giant at the championship venue, he was introduced to Google's AI chatbot named Gemini that created personalized chess sets from scratch.

Prompted by the Google team, who showed how the chatbot could create chess sets from their various prompts moving in the directions of Gukesh's favorites, the champion asked for a trial of the tool and very quickly produced an all-mango chess set as his favorite fruit.

In proceeding with his experience, Gukesh made the robot come up with an opponent's set of limes. So the outcome was a hilarious game AI powered where mango-themed pieces battled lime-themed pieces. It really amused the young champion, as well as the team in Google.

The jovial exchange with the Gemini showcased the promises of artificial intelligence blended into the personal interest in conventional games like chess.

In September 2024, Google announced that it will be the title sponsor for the 2024 FIDE World Championship match between grandmasters Gukesh and Ding Liren.

The victory of Gukesh in Singapore marks a historic milestone for Indian chess and further cements its growing claim on the world stage. As he begins his reign as the FIDE World Chess Champion, the world of chess anticipates hearing more from this prodigy.
